Character: Wendy Carter
Canon: Don't Starve Together; referencing up to the "Encore" update
Age: 10... ish? (IC she has not aged and doesn't know, OOC Klei has said somewhere between 8-10 for her)
Background Information: Wiki summary
Personality: Though Wendy is very young, she is very well read and therefore often sounds and acts FAR beyond her age. Even before her most life-changing event, she was the type of girl to have her nose in a book either about botany or written by gothic horror authors, one of her favorites of course being Edgar Allan Poe. When Abigail (her twin sister) was still alive, she would often be the one dragging Wendy out of her tendency to huddle up and drift into reading for hours on end. She was always the anxious and overly cautious sort, and her twin sister held the adventurous energy for the both of them, allowing Wendy to explore and play with someone in her corner.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck, and Wendy found herself without that support and worse, without that beloved sister. "Moving on" was not a concept that Wendy could embrace, as the loss of Abigail felt as if she had been torn asunder and had died, herself. Thus began Wendy's potent obsession with death and the afterlife, fueled by her desire for answers and for some way to reunite with Abigail.
Finding Abigail was not an easy feat, and it was never even promising of a search in the first place - humans throughout all of history have tried to contact the afterlife, to understand the dead, or have taken advantage of those who were searching. Wendy's time examining and desperately searching for mediums or other ways to reach beyond brought her into the American Spiritualist movement, which was thriving at the time. Seances, mediums, rituals... nothing could or would summon Abigail back from the dead, and Wendy's depression became incredibly severe, deteriorating her mental health.
Once brought into the Constant and reunited with at least Abigail's spirit, Wendy's hopelessness stalled - she still often crumbles and falls to pieces mentally, but with Abigail by her side she is able to retain pieces of her old personality and liveliness. She is still sharp-witted, still enjoys simple child-like joys (despite her frequent attempt to protest that idea), and enjoys her literary references. But to say that she is back to her old self is a misjudgment of her character. She is still very wounded, still contemplates life and its meaning (or lack thereof), and has a very intense fixation on the idea of death and how people relate to it. Her dependency on Abigail in life came back tenfold in the Constant, where her fight for survival against monsters of all sizes and shapes make her very dependent on her sister's supernatural strength and presence overall.
Abilities & Inventory: By cradling the red bloom containing the soul of her dead twin sister, Wendy can beckon for her and summon her sister's spirit. Abigail can be whispered to through the flower, either to be more peaceful or more aggressive - an important tool of survival in the Constant. Though Abigail's summoning used to require a death to occur nearby, Wendy no longer needs to rely on it.
Wendy can also construct a "Sisturn" for Abigail. By placing flower petals in the urn along with the ashes, Abigail is able to more swiftly and strongly manifest. The Sisturn also holds a supernatural aura, soothing frazzled minds and harried souls by staying in its mere presence.
Finally, Wendy has perfected a form of alchemical magic she calls "Ectoherbology". Using flowers collected from ghosts and graves, as well as various other plants or animal products, Wendy can concoct elixirs that affect Abigail and presumably, any other spirit.
Dreamotion may grow to expand on ectoherbology, and Wendy may be able to conjure up new ideas and effects for even the living's souls.
Suitability & Plans: I am interested in playing a character that is very very different from Blitzø, and who can mingle with characters that would otherwise be thoroughly put off by the gregarious imp. There is also a fondness I have for playing characters like Wendy that are cute at first glance, but contrast that sharply by being as morbid and grim as Wendy is. The dichotomy is always a lot of fun to play and it's fun to take other characters off guard and see how they handle getting used to her.
Wendy will be having quite an interesting time getting used to Songerein. Unlike the surreal world she was trapped in before, this game is far more gentle and forgiving (ironic, given the dangers absolutely presented in the dream world). While she won't get her dearest wish to have Abigail alive and well beside her, she will be able to possibly find some degree of normalcy and comfort... in a world that isn't hell-bent on killing her over and over and over again for a sadistic game.
Test Drive Sample: TDM top post // Akechi, Della, Jarlaxle, Jake the Dog
Abigail: Briefly on Abigail; she appears as a spirit, and can contact things but can't manipulate anything finely. She is cold, and harmless, until riled up - then she is able to emit an aura that damages every living thing around her save for Wendy herself. The aura is weakest at day, and strongest at night. Though she is a hollow imitation of the little girl she used to be, she does exhibit a playful personality, twirling around in place and giggling faintly. But the only one who can hear what she can say is Wendy herself, and to any other ears, she merely lets out the sound of too-indistinct whispers.
